Here is how you do it. Take every product that you carry and look at all the parts of that product. If you can order the individual parts or make individual parts as spare inventory, do so. This gives you a plan in case a part is defective or damaged in the shipping process. Have a form for your accounting that covers a replacement part cost and shipping. You will want to track how much things cost you to replace and ship. This can easily be forgotten if you are in the fireman mode. Have some extra stock on hand for replacements. Have a return shipping method laid out so that you can make return labels for the customer to attach to a box that might need to be resent back to you. All the big shippers have this option built into their websites and you can easily go to the tracking number for that customer and get a return label. If you have the item fulfilled through a warehouse, they also have that capability.

Make sure you put a return policy in your website that covers a restocking fee if someone wants to return something because they do not like it or ordered the wrong item. This will also force you to think about a return policy since you will eventually have one. Make sure you add a testimonial or two to that policy, it’s free and it’s like adding insurance onto your page.

I found myself sitting in the HR department of one of the most famous companies in America. My ice queen soon to be boss wanted me and I knew it. After all, I had graduated from a pseudo impressive university and I looked really good in my Ann Klein suit. Problem was, I'd never worked a day in Corporate America and I had just turned fifty. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks but the bills were piling up and the only place my freedom loving artistic spirit had gotten me was down and out in New York City.

I was offered the job; mostly because the actress in me conjured up Sigourney Weaver in Working Girl, a dash of Faye Dunaway in Network and I performed a nifty little improv using the shrewd and sassy elegance of Judy Holiday and Melanie Griffith as rather impressive role models. My stunning performance worked and there I was, embraced by my new corporate family and occasionally loaned back out to the rest of society, my pet Pomeranian and my old disco buddies.

After filling the pages of my gratitude journal for at least six months, and thanking the universe for this rather prestigious position, the honeymoon wore off and I became increasingly shell shocked. My co-workers were very strange indeed. I didn't feel that they were family at all, but that's what having a job is called on the Planet Corporate: family. Oh, they like putting us in teams too. Teams connote competition and a great rah, rah spirit. In my old world they called it "opening night." Here they call it "making goal." As you can imagine, I was confused.

I had a hard time understanding these people. They talked about a lot of things that didn't really interest me. When they weren’t obsessing on how low the sales numbers were, they were obsessing on the New York Jets, what to nuke for lunch and whether or not the Bachelor would chose the blonde or the tenacious little redhead. I was beginning to feel quite miserable. Why, the first time I heard I had a direct report I thought I was going to be writing up a presentation on how I was going to direct the Christmas play. The first time I was called a subordinate, I almost wept aloud. Jeez, if I wanted to be subordinate to anyone I would have married my ex.

Then I was told I was getting a performance review. Well, finally something to look forward to. I was happy at last. Surely, my calculated persona as a prisoner in pin stripes was impressive. Why, I learned to click down the hallowed halls of this very famous corporation in three inch heels. I found the perfect skirt length and kept my nails conservatively French tipped. I even talked numbers all day, like they were as important as season tickets to the Met, and I pretended to be in a constant state of urgency so my boss would think I was absolutely killing myself to make my sales goal.

Well, you could have knocked me over in a breath when I discovered that a performance review was actually based on whether or not I was selling anything. Disappointingly, my review was moderate to cold. I felt that I wanted to crawl under a rock and not emerge until I figured out how I could learn to care how much money my company made off the ninety percent of my life it was taking. My self esteem had taken an affront. Here I thought my humanity was more important.

So be it. I licked my wounds and went on like a good soldier. These people were expanding my sales goal wider than a middle age waist line, but still, I persisted. I plodded along, cursing my fate and trying to figure out if I'd enjoy driving a cab for a living.

Finally, some good news from the Planet of the Corporate: We were all going on a retreat. I joyously ran out to buy a yoga mat, karma sutra oil to share with colleagues, hot pink sweatpants and new Addidas. I couldn't want to chant with my corporate family. I was ecstatic.

But then, the bomb fell. I was both surprised and appalled. My corporate family was thrusting me into a hotel room with another adult, asking me to share the spit and spittle of sleep, the intimacy of bodily woes and the loss of privacy on my frequent calls home to the dog walker. That did it. I rebelled. I wore the new Addidas and the hot pink sweats to their all day meetings on how to sell more stuff. I chanted enthusiastically during the power lunch and used some little book on cheese they gave me as a place mat for the very gooey award night dinner.

Wouldn't you know it, I was written up. At first I thought I'd earned some good review on the little monologue I gave to the company president on corporate greed. Not so, I was put on probation and sent home to watch Oprah, the Secret and meditate on changing my life as I sat by the Hudson with my Pomeranian re-reading What Color Is Your Parachute.

After two weeks, I was back on the planet Corporate wondering how I'd get through it. I couldn’t quit, it was already going to take me two years to get out of the debt I'd accumulated relying on an income doing extra film work and occasional voice overs for pharmaceutical drug companies. I needed the damn job. But something had shifted for me during my little reprisal from the bull pen of consumption. Maybe it was Oprah, maybe the law of attraction really works. I sure was intending to alter my present state. And it happened just like that. I put all my efforts into seeing myself as a happy little puppy and lo and behold, I started writing a novel.

Once I began, the words just flowed. I wrote and I wrote till my little fingers twitched. My life was altered forever by that simple action. I now started to wake at five am with a passion I hadn't felt in years. I threw myself at the keyboard for an hour or more. I filled my weekends weaving a story, creating characters that I couldn't get enough of. My joy was abundant.

Wouldn't you know it? The bull pen became tolerable. Even the ice queen melted a bit and the complicated hidden agendas of coworkers became insignificant. My head was filled with plot and character. Who cares who wants my head on a corporate silver platter? What cared I for corporate agendas when my chapters flowed off the page? I thought about nothing else. My sales numbers even increased, as did my tolerance for the ice queens and bully boys on the Planet Corporate. How strange it all was.

Now I have a book, actually several books. You see, I stole back my time. I found a place that I wanted to be. You might say I took back my soul to write. I would advise anyone out there who has found themselves on an alien planet, to follow their passion as well, even if it doesn't get you back on the planet Earth right away, I can assure you that eventually, it will, one way or the other. You see, your freedom will come out of the creation and your joy is in action, not the inaction of just feeling miserable. Writing is a place no one can enter or soil with demands you may never reach and definitions that limit you. So find your book and write it. If you don't, your Corporate family will become the title of your life, and the spirit who longs to fly free will loose touch with the words that might have been, and the key to the door not taken.

It is so important to be totally upfront. Other issues sometimes develop when one partner is far more ambitious than the other or just wants different things out of life. Unless your dreams of a perfect marriage are on the same playing field then it’s often a ticket to disaster. Couples need to be totally upfront and honest with each other both before and after marriage to ensure that the dreams and desires of both parties are met and fulfilled.

• Financial issues put a great strain on any relationship. Couples often divorce due to lack of money when all they really need to do is solve the core problem. • Letting yourself go can be a real relationship killer especially if you were really good looking when you got married. If just one partner gets too comfortable in the relationship and feels they no longer need to make an effort it can become a major negative to the future of the marriage.

This is but a short list of reasons why marriages might fail and just because something on the list will destroy one marriage it doesn’t mean to say it will destroy another. Like people, all marriages are unique, the real key to saving your marriage is, understanding what is causing you to feel that your marriage is failing, recognising what action you need to take to put it right and having the determination and the desire to do so.

Everyone deserves to have the ability to lay their head on a pillow at night and drift off to sleep. But, for so many, this isn't what happens.

Be it the events of the day, the pressures that surround you or some other residing factor, not being able to sleep only complicates matters and adds to the stresses of what you are already experiencing.

Doctors are quite happy to test, prod and probe you and feed you plenty of pills and potions that they feel might assist you to get at least some sleep. These may work temporarily but they don't work long term, and you find yourself back in the Doctor's consulting room, desperate for their next 'well, if that didn't work, try this' scenario.

Sorry, but after years of putting myself through their trial and error methods, I lost all faith in Doctors and their 'standardized' ways of treating people with sleeping problems. I started thinking 'outside of the square' and stumbled across something that finally worked for me.

Here's an example.

How many people, including Doctors, have suggested you try counting sheep or something similar? It's the 'standard' response from people when they find out you have a sleeping problem. The silly part is, it actually works but NOT as you are currently doing it.

Let me explain.

What do you do when you start to count? You begin at one, right? Well, if you are using this method to get to sleep, the ONLY way this would EVER work is when you are bored senseless and you do go off to sleep but it is neither restful or relaxing. It also would be a very short sleep and you would find yourself starting from one again and counting off into oblivion! That's because you are counting in the WRONG DIRECTION!

You are looking for a result - SLEEP! To achieve it, there MUST be a start and finish point - the finish point being you getting to sleep. If you start counting from one, there is no structured end which makes this method unworkable and therefore undesirable. You are searching for regularity, not one off results.

Pick a figure close to 100 and work your way slowly backwards to zero, taking a slow deep breath with each counted number. This focus enables your mind to relax and gives you a finishing point to achieve. Your body relaxes with each deep breath and your mind remains focused on the important task of reaching your goal. Don't stress if you lose count. Just pick a number higher than the last one you remember and continue slowly counting backwards, remembering to take that deep breath with each number.

Is it self hypnosis? Who cares what label you attach to it - it works - that's ALL that counts!

This little exercise, coupled with a few other 'outside the square' exercises, allows me to get what used to be impossible - regular and relaxing sleeping patterns. Maybe it can help you as well.

Debt settlement realistic expectations

It never fails to amuse me to hear critics of debt settlement warning those who are considering this form of debt relief that they may be facing a tax liability as a result of canceled debt. Even funnier are the warnings about the effect that debt settlement will have on your credit score.

Why do I find this amusing? Well, apparently these so-called “experts” have never been in a situation where they’re forced to choose between bankruptcy, debt consolidation, debt settlement or consumer credit counseling. When you’re faced with tough financial decisions, and you’re unable to make ends meet, the last thing you should be concerned with is your credit score. Rather, it’s time to find a solution to put your debt and sleepless nights behind you.

If you’re contemplating debt settlement, but have heard some negative feedback you may have some legitimate concerns. That being said, please understand that your concerns relating to debt settlement should lie strictly in the area of some debt settlement firms out there who want nothing more than to take your money and provide little to no service. This should be your number one concern, not your credit score or tax liability. We’ll talk more about debt settlement firms in a moment, but first let’s take a look at those factors which seem to have the critics so concerned.

Will you have a tax liability if you should decide to seek relief through debt settlement? You may or may not. Creditors are required to report all canceled debt over the amount of $600 to the IRS, and you will be required to report that canceled debt as income, and will likely be provided a Form 1099 from each creditor from whom you have received relief in the form of debt settlement. Keep in mind, however, that an “insolvency” rule exists for individuals who are considered insolvent at the time they settled their debts. This means that if your liabilities exceed your assets at the time of each settlement with your creditors, you are classified as insolvent, and will not likely face a tax liability. I highly recommend that you talk with a professional tax advisor to see where you stand with regard to the insolvency rule. Even if you are faced with a tax liability, what’s the big deal? Owing taxes due to debt settlement is simply because you realized a savings, and no doubt you’ll be much further ahead than would be the case if you remained thousands of dollars in debt, barely keeping your head above water each month.

As for your credit score, again, I don’t quite understand why this would be a concern. You’re in debt, you’re losing sleep and you don’t know how you’ll do it from one month to the next. Why worry about your credit score? One of the major perks of good credit is to obtain more credit – I think you’ll agree that you probably don’t want or need anymore credit at this particular time. Put your debt behind you and then start thinking about your credit score. In any case, the impact on your credit score through debt settlement is only temporary, and most people see a much improved score within 6-9 months of completing a debt settlement program. As a matter of fact, I talked with a former client just eight months after she paid off her final settlement, and she already had a 681 credit score. Not bad, considering had she not chosen to negotiate with her creditors she would still be borrowing from one credit card to pay another, and the cycle could have continued for several more years.

Some critics wonder what the actual savings through debt settlement really is, considering that interest and late fees continue to accrue prior to reaching a settlement agreement. Well, in most cases people do realize a significant amount of savings – even after late fees and interest, tax liabilities and debt settlement firm fees. Let’s say, however, that you’re $50,000 in debt, enter a debt settlement program and in the end (after paying taxes and professional fees) you only end up saving $10,000 (which is not very likely). So what? You still saved $10,000, which is a lot of money. You’re no longer paying minimum monthly payments, which could take up to 40 years to pay off. You saved thousands and thousands of dollars in interest that you would have ended up paying had you decided to continue making your monthly payments. You’re out of debt much sooner than you would have been if you had chosen another path. And best of all, you’re out of debt – period.

So, as you can see, debt settlement in itself is not necessarily the evil that some people would like you to believe it is. Some debt settlement firms, however, are. Because of this it’s very important to properly research this area prior to hiring a firm to represent you. First, please check the Better Business Bureau record of each company you’re considering. After you’ve narrowed it down, talk to those remaining companies and find out how their fee structure works, and if it sounds like they can be trusted. If a company you’re considering wants their fee up front – prior to providing a service – move on. It may take some extra time, but you can find reputable firms that will not charge you a fee until they have reached satisfactory results.

Three factors of leadership motivation

Leaders do nothing more important than get results. But you can't get results by yourself. You need others to help you do it. And the best way to have other people get results is not by ordering them but motivating them. Yet many leaders fail to motivate people to achieve results because those leaders misconstrue the concept and applications of motivation.

To understand motivation and apply it daily, let's understand its three critical pillars. Know these pillars and put them into action to greatly enhance your abilities to lead for results.

1. MOTIVATION IS PHYSICAL ACTION. "Motivation" has common roots with "motor," "momentum," "motion," "mobile," etc. — all words that denote movement, physical action. An essential feature of motivation is physical action. Motivation isn't about what people think or feel but what they physically do. When motivating people to get results, challenge them to take those actions that will realize those results.

I counsel leaders who must motivate individuals and teams to get results not to deliver presentations but "leadership talks." Presentations communicate information.. But when you want to motivate people, you must do more than simply communicate information. You must have them believe in you and take action to follow you. A key outcome of every leadership talk must be physical action, physical action that leads to results.

For instance, I worked with the newly-appointed director of a large marketing department who wanted the department to achieve sizable increases in the results. However, the employees were a demoralized bunch who had been clocking tons of overtime under her predecessor and were feeling angry that their efforts were not being recognized by senior management.

She could have tried to order them to get the increased results. Many leaders do that. But order-leadership founders in today's highly competitive, rapidly changing markets. Organizations are far more competitive when their employees instead of being ordered to go from point A to point B want to go from point A to point B. So I suggested that she take a first step in getting the employees to increase results by motivating those employees to want to increase results. They would "want to" when they began to believe in her leadership. And the first step in enlisting that belief was for her to give a number of leadership talks to the employees.

One of her first talks that she planned was to the department employees in the company's auditorium.

She told me, "I want them to know that I appreciate the work they are doing and that I believe that they can get the results I'm asking of them. I want them to feel good about themselves."

"Believing is not enough," I said. "Feeling good is not enough. Motivation must take place. Physical action must take place. Don't give the talk until you know what precise action you are going to have happen."

She got the idea of having the CEO come into the room after the talk, shake each employee's hand, and tell each how much he appreciated their hard work — physical action. She didn't stop there. After the CEO left, she challenged each employee to write down on a piece of paper three specific things that they needed from her to help them get the increases in results and then hand those pieces of paper to her personally — physical action.

Mind you, that leadership talk wasn't magic dust sprinkled on the employees to instantly motivate them. (To turn the department around so that it began achieving sizable increases in results, she had to give many leadership talks in the weeks and months ahead.) But it was a beginning. Most importantly, it was the right beginning.

2. MOTIVATION IS DRIVEN BY EMOTION. Emotion and motion come from the same Latin root meaning "to move". When you want to move people to take action, engage their emotions. An act of motivation is an act of emotion. In any strategic management endeavor, you must make sure that the people have a strong emotional commitment to realizing it.

When I explained this to the chief marketing officer of a worldwide services company, he said, "Now I know why we're not growing! We senior leaders developed our marketing strategy in a bunker! He showed me his "strategy" document. It was some 40 pages long, single-spaced. The points it made were logical, consistent, and comprehensive. It made perfect sense. That was the trouble. It made perfect, intellectual sense to the senior leaders. But it did not make experiential sense to middle management who had to carry it out. They had about as much in-put into the strategy as the window washers at corporate headquarters. So they sabotaged it in many innovative ways. Only when the middle managers were motivated — were emotionally committed to carrying out the strategy — did that strategy have a real chance to succeed.

3. MOTIVATION IS NOT WHAT WE DO TO OTHERS. IT'S WHAT OTHERS DO TO THEMSELVES. The English language does not accurately depict the psychological truth of motivation. The truth is that we cannot motivate anybody to do anything. The people we want to motivate can only motivate themselves. The motivator and the motivatee are always the same person. We as leaders communicate, they motivate. So our "motivating" others to get results really entails our creating an environment in which they motivate themselves to get those results.

For example: a commercial division leader almost faced a mutiny on his staff when in a planning session, he put next year's goals, numbers much higher than the previous year's, on the overhead. The staff all but had to be scrapped off the ceiling after they went ballistic. "We busted our tails to get these numbers last year. Now you want us to get much higher numbers? No way!"

He told me. "We can hit those numbers. I just have to get people motivated!"

I gave him my "motivator-and-motivatee-are-the-same-person!" pitch. I suggested that he create an environment in which they could motivate themselves. So he had them assess what activities got results and what didn't. They discovered that they spent more than 60 percent of their time on work that had nothing to do with getting results. He then had them develop a plan to eliminate the unnecessary work. Put in charge of their own destiny, they got motivated! They developed a great plan and started to get great results.

Over the long run, your career success does not depend on what schools you went to and what degrees you have. That success depends instead on your ability to motivate individuals and teams to get results. Motivation is like a high voltage cable lying at your feet. Use it the wrong way, and you'll get a serious shock. But apply motivation the right way by understanding and using the three pillars, plug the cable in, as it were, and it will serve you well in many powerful ways throughout your career.

How to recognize and diffuse hidden pressures in cold calling

Here are four hidden sales pressures that we bring to our cold calling:

1. Focusing On the Sale

If you're like most people who make cold calls, you're hoping to make a sale -- or at least an appointment -- before you even pick up the phone. The problem is the people you call somehow almost immediately notice your mindset. They sense that you are only focused on your goals and interests, rather than on finding out what they might need or want. This short-circuits the whole process of communication and trust building.

So try this. Practice shifting your mental focus into thinking, "When I make this call, first I'm going to build a conversation. From this, a level of trust can emerge which allows us to exchange information back and forth. And then we can both determine if there's a fit or not." When your focus shifts from making a sale into making a conversation, there’s no sales pressure. Many people enjoy conversations. Moreover, as long as you’re sincere, this will be one of them.

You’re also exchanging information rather than "informing" someone of your product or service. This helps your potential client know that he or she matters to you. This means you’re not being experienced as "pushy."

Keep in mind that letting go of trying to force the outcome of the conversation into a sales event means being totally relaxed with the idea that your solution may not be a fit for them. When you’re exploring right along with another person whether there’s a "fit," then that person feels no sales pressure.

2. Talking About Ourselves First

When we start our cold calls with a mini-pitch about who we are and what we have to offer, we’ve introduced sales pressure right away. The other person knows we want to make a sale, and they have to respond to that pressure. Most will respond with defense or rejection.

So instead, start your conversation by focusing on a need or issue you know the other person is likely facing. Step into their world and invite them to share whether they’re open to exploring possible solutions with you.

3. Forcing the Conversation into a Pre-Planned Strategy or Script

Here’s a hard one to avoid if we’re using scripts or carefully planned cold calling strategies. When we rely on these methods, it’s usually because we just don’t know how else to "do" cold calling. However, when we take charge of a conversation in this way, the other person almost always feels like they are being maneuvered. That’s pressure.

If we aren’t allowing someone else to be fully involved in the conversation, then we’re using sales pressure to try to control the outcome. Potential clients feel this sales pressure, even when it’s subtle. Therefore, once again, "The Wall" goes up.

I’m not suggesting that we don’t prepare and plan for our cold calls. There are some really good ways to begin cold calls that we’ll want to use over and over. Additionally, there are special phrases we can use that convey well the fact that we’re interested in solving a problem for the other person.

What we want to avoid, however, is trying to control a cold calling conversation. This almost always happens with scripts and old-style sales strategies. Potential clients feel this pressure and respond negatively.

4. Over-Enthusiasm

The problem with over-enthusiasm in our cold calling is that the other person has to make a decision whether to "buy into" our perspective, or reject it. They feel the hidden sales pressure that wants them to be carried along with our enthusiasm. This usually means braking, whether gently or abruptly.

With over-enthusiasm (which is often just an offshoot of our tension), potential clients feel somewhat boxed in. They feel the pressure of our expectations so they feel compelled to respond either positively or negatively. Most will almost always respond negatively.

Completely eliminating all sales pressure from your cold calling conversations will certainly invite the other person to respond much more warmly and positively.

Why paying your income taxes with a credit card is a rip off

If you own your own business or have not been deducting enough from your paychecks each week, you will probably owe some income taxes when tax time rolls around. This is never fun, and if you do not have the money in your checking account right now, you might be tempted to pay the taxes with your credit card. A word of advice: don’t.

When you owe income tax to the federal government or the state government, they are aware that the amount you owe may be over the amount you have access to at the moment. They prepare for this eventuality by allowing tax payers to file for an extension to pay their debt. You can arrange for a payment plan to be in effect for the total amount.

You will of course pay interest on the amount that you are putting off, but the interest rate that the government charges is relatively low. With state governments this number will vary, so check with your local state tax office. But for the federal government, the current rate of interest on unpaid taxes is seven percent, which is the federal short-term rate plus three percent.

Now consider your credit card. Most credit cards carry an interest rate of anywhere from twelve to twenty-one percent. If you owe taxes that you can’t pay, you probably have a higher interest rate credit card. This means that whatever you pay in a lump sum to the government, you will be financing with your credit card company at the interest rate you pay for your regular purchases. If this is fifteen to twenty percent, you will end up paying much more for your taxes.

In the end, it pays to work within the government’s system of extensions and take their lower interest rate on the amount of your tax you cannot pay yet. If the payment play that they offer you is still too steep for you to pay each month, then call the hotline number provided on the offer and request another plan be arranged. You may need to show proof of your income to do this, but it will be worth it so you don’t default on the unpaid taxes.

The winter boat show season is red-hot

It seems counterintuitive that winter is the best time of the year to buy a new boat or personal watercraft. But those who wait until late spring or summer to make their purchase often are disappointed to learn that the new vessel they want is sold out.

According to Bryan Seti, national marketing manager for Yamaha Motor Corp., this is because when it comes to buying a new boat or personal watercraft, shopping early gets the best deals.

"This past year, we sold out of our best-selling WaveRunners [personal watercrafts] before the July 4 weekend and our most affordable WaveRunner, the VX110, was nearly sold out in June," Seti said. "It's harder for consumers to find a deal when supply is that low."

Seti says that buying a boat or personal watercraft at a winter boat show will guarantee that you find the boat you want because dealers are motivated to sell.

"Our dealers are receiving their 2006 orders now and those units take up a lot of space at the dealership," said Seti. "Dealers tend to get motivated when they see a crowded sales floor."
